Dichroic means "two-colored". One that passes through and the other that reflects back off. A piece of dichroic glass is created when glass is coated with multiple micro-layers of metal oxides vaporized in a vacuum chamber. They are applied in layers only 3 to 5 millionths of an inch thick.The various layers interfere with light passing through the coatings, so that only selected wave lengths (colors) can pass through and the remaining wave lengths are left to reflect back off the surface. That is what gives dichroic glass its brilliant reflective properties.
